Play and Nature

This month I am joining CELESTIAL SEASONINGS in kicking off the New Year right with the TEALC WELLNESS CHALLENGE. I have committed to the personal challenges; "To Be Happy(er)" and to drink tea daily. I thank each one of you who has shared their personal challenge for 2013 in THIS POST. You have inspired me and encouraged me to keep growing. For those just joining in, head on over and share your personal challenge in a comment HERE by 12:00 pm PST, January 11th and you'll be entered to win a month's supply of Celestial Seasonings wellness tea and a copy of the movie HAPPY™.

......................................................................................................................................................................

I have a good life.

I am content.

I am happy.

But the notion of being even happier intrigues me. Can one be filled with too much happiness? I think not. And so this year my personal challenge for 2013 is to ramp up my happiness meter.

According to scientists interviewed in the documentary Happy™, two of the building blocks that can lead to greater happiness are:

  • A personal involvement with nature
  • Engaging in play and new experiences

For many people, time spent outdoors is a very joyful and rejuvinating experience and, like acts of kindess, helps them connect with something larger than themselves.

The act of play—or losing oneself in an activity or hobby that gives great joy—actually boosts happiness and fulfillment. For some it may be a game of tennis or time in the garden. For others it may be an early morning surf or simply a walk on the beach.

This year I want to carve out more time for combining play and the outdoors—as Rocky Mountain weather permits! Walking the dog at sunset or through fresh fallen snow never fails to lift my spirit. My boys are young and the years I have to left to play with them are numbered and so I want to get outside with them and swing that bat. I want to go on more picnics. I want to learn how to fly fish. And like you, Catherine, I want to pack up my oils and go paint in a field of wild daisies.

So as part of my personal challenge for 2013 ...

I simply want to live a more balanced life with plenty of outdoor play thrown in.

Want to join me?

And on a side note, who'd thought that when our parents yelled "GO OUTSIDE AND PLAY!!!" that they only had our happiness in mind. :)

I don't spend nearly enough time outside. I was born and raised on a farm but now work in an office in the city where I can't see the sky and in the evenings and weekends I do my food blog and look after house and family. And I live two minute's walk from the sea.The balance is definitely not there.

Poha ... Tutu Flo gave me this pic and a bunch more over Christmas. On the back is written "Alexa's Paradise" and it was. I don't think I'd be able to find it today without your help, but I remember it so well ... going there with mom and Tutu Stevie. A magical place. xo

Suzanne ... I feel much the same. My husband and I were raised in the country and we miss it. I crave being outside. Even when I lived in Seattle I did what I could to find little slices of "nature" in the city ... my plot in one of the community gardens there was my oasis along with skipping rocks on the sound. Now we live where summer is 2 months out of the year. Have to buck up and get bundled up to go out in the winter. Sometimes walking the dog means heading out into -10 wind-chill. I'm not always brave, but try to be : ) I guess we do what we can. xoLexie
